Operating System is software. It is a platform of computer. An O/S is a type of system software, which creates user interface. Which is a visual representation of the computer on the monitor? That makes sense to the people using the computer. Through an user interface creating an O/S enables user to determine the available installed programs and run, use and shut down the program of there choice. O/S enables user to install programs through which he can take more advantage of computer.
Depending on user interface created by an O/S, we can divide O/S in to CUI (Character User Interface/Command User Interface "eg. DOS, Linux, UNIX etc.") and GUI (Graphics User Interface “eg. Linux, Unix, Windows etc.")
